**CONTAINS SPOILERS** Advance at your own risk!
After much anticipation, Supernatural premiered last night on the CW network. The sixth season of the series has been waited by fans for months and after a long wait they have been rewarded with Exile on main street, the first episode of the sixth season.
It got off to an unexpected start, like many others I expected a classic – The Road so Far moment – cue Kansas with Carry On My Wayward Son or well, AC/DC – since The Road So Far usually ends a season (this episode did mark the end of an era, didn’t it?), but since now Dean Winchester has been domesticated we have a completely different tune – still classic Bob Seger. I’m still rooting for the return of the more classic, past season tunes on the show.
Dean Winchester, hunter extraordinaire has spent a great part of the year following the epic battle between Good and Evil being a suburban dad. Lisa and Ben have provided him with the affection and attention needed after the loss of Sam, he made friends with neighbour Sid and his family and got a job as a worker of some sorts.
The way the differences are shown between his life before and after season 5 finale is quite entertaining and had a few fans squee with excitement, don’t try to deny it, I know who you are.

One thing that became obvious right from the beginning was that even though Dean seemed like a regular guy to the outside world, he still hasn’t forgotten his former life. Devil traps under the door mat, holy water at the ready, gun under his bed. The one thing that I couldn’t get over was the fact that the Impala, our beloved Metallicar was under a tarp in the garage. Let’s hope she makes a swift comeback.
Now cue the excitement! Dean finds himself trapped once more in a world of demon hunting when he begins hearing odd noises and finding sulphur – we all know what that means! Demons are around.
Just to remind us why we love Supernatural , in the middle of a seemingly frightening situation – Dean, a gun and a building with sulphur at the gates – we get a déjà-vu moment when our hero gets spooked by a Yorkie. Can you say Yellow Fever? Then again, we all remember how that ended.
After his Yorkie adventure, Dean finds himself in the garage when – and this is where I gasped in fright – YED appears! But that is not all – Sam shows up just as Azazel is choking Dean to death and stabs him with a syringe.
Turns out it was all a dream, caused by Djins on a warpath against the Winchester. Now this is the moment we have all been waiting for – Dean and Sam’s reunion. It was awkward, odd, painful and brilliantly acted by both leads.
We got the whole nine yards of emotions from Dean at the news that his brother has been around for over a year, first excitement – You’re here!, then shock – You didn’t show up for a year!, then anger – You didn’t tell me, how could you?! Sam was much different from before, even when Dean hugged him you couldn’t really say whether or not he was actually excited about seeing his brother. He kinda reminded me of someone with Asperger’s, they know the emotion should be there and how it’s supposed to look like, but they just can’t feel it. I suppose time in the cage with Lucifer and Michael might do that to you.
But I digress, seems that Sammy was not the only one that made it back from the dead – cue the Campbells, and I have to say I am not particularly impressed by them. Grandpa Campbell is alive – how? We don’t know, some cousins whose names I can’t remember because they were just not interesting enough are also around, apparently acting like they invented hunting – which according to Samuel they might have as well had. Mayflower hunters, really?

Back to the story, since Djins are around and kicking butt left and right, Lisa and Ben are in danger, so who you gonna call? No, not the ghostfacers! Bobby, as usual. The loyal friend who apparently was in on the secret of Sam’s return. Now don’t get me wrong, I liked the episode, but Bobby and Sam had crappy attitudes – you don’t get to decide someone is better off thinking his brother is dead! Or well, in Hell in Lucifer’s penthouse where we know it’s not much fun since even Crowley can’t imagine what might go on in there. You don’t get to act righteous about letting someone spin out of control by simply adding – we did it for your own good at the end of the sentence. Rant over.
So, Dean, Sam and the forgettable Campbells decide to battle it out with the Djins by using the boys as bait, we all know those plans are always turning out right, don’t we? Well, the plan is a bit of a bust, Dean gets re-trapped in the Djin world where the scene that had fans excited – Lisa getting pinned to the ceiling and burning – took place. Say what you want guys, I like Lisa, she is what Dean needs, especially now and she proved her worth by being there for him, even now.
Most Djins die, save for one the Campbells stash away – me thinks the serum against Djins they created might come from…well, an actual Djin?
Dean offers Sam the Impala and, gasp! Sam says no, I know, I am just as shocked! And Sam rides into the sunrise without Dean who prefers to preserve his new found roots. We know it won’t be long, Sam needs a humanizing connection at his side and by the looks of it the Campbells can’t provide it.
All in all, 5 out of 5 starts for the premiere, I loved it! Can’t wait for the next episodes – it involves the boys and a baby. Hmm, intriguing.

Love the show and rightly said, The Premiere was wonderful.
For sure all the expressions and reactions in this episode will lead into something. I am sure on one thing that Sam, Bobby and the Campbells are hiding something from Dean. At least Sam is hiding something from Dean for sure. Waiting for the next hunt.
Seasons never start with Carry on my Wayward Son, that1s only for the season finales.
But every season usually starts with AC/DC. This year it did not as far as I know. Cause it was ‘Beautiful Loser’ by Bob Seger. (Sorry if I know it incorrectly).
But it was unusual that there was no ‘The Road so Far’, but ‘Last year’
But that Road ended with S5 so this Road is a different one, so of course it’s not the same Road.
I am a bit suspicious of the Campbell family, but maybe their characters will turn interesting if we see more of them.
I am also on Team Lisa. She is great, that Dean was a mess for months, but she was not surprised by it and that she still wants him around.
I am also excited about next week’s episode too. Have you watched the promo yet?
That’s gonna be awesome.
I also liked this dark and cold feeling of the premier. It was still like that even with the few happy scenes with Lisa and Ben
And I like dark and cold and creepy.
Now I just want Cas to come back in ep 3 and smash Sam’s car
And it1s cool, how even thoug the angel was not in the episode they still talked about him
Sam is the reason I watch this show and i’ll be furious if the writers take his humanity and don’t explore the PTSD spent behind hell time in Lucifer’s cage. He should be wholly and completely traumatised, not just fine and dandy, this is a weird decision on the writers part.
I also watch this show for the Sam and Dean connection and the fact that Dean could just leave back to his normal life without his brother enrages me. Uhhh stop running away and grow a pair Dean, i dislike this boring version and the harsh version of Sam.
Only positive was no Castiel, he’s a large part of the reason I was so annoyed with last season, and like the Campbells he just further proves the theory that Sam and Dean are better on their own, we get to see more brotherly interaction without the distraction.
I totally agree with you Daniela: 5 stars!
I must quote Scyllaya when she says that “this Road is a different one”.
If we consider the previous seasons as the Kripke’s brainchild, this is the “Sera Gamble Gosplel”.
I don’t think Sera wanted to concentrate on a striking beginning, since we all knew about Sam from season 5 finale and we saw Samuel in the promo pictures. The best part is yet to come, indeed!
P.S. Ghostfacers!! ahahah
I have to admit, I was glad Sam and Bobby kept Dean in the dark. Dean looked like he was getting along so well in his new life. He’s a big boy, he would’ve been ok in the long run without his little brother. Although that didn’t stop me from squealing like a little girl when they hugged. I hope the season doesn’t become too Dean-centric and we get to go a little further into how our beloved Sammy is doing.
P.S. I think they still better call the ghostfacers.
This was a really great summation of the episode.
I think the biggest change I noticed was the change in chemistry between the brothers. I’m not sure if its a thing between the actors themselves or if it is something that was purposely acted out, but it was strained nontheless and I wasn’t a fan. It was like the brotherly love disapppeared somewhere between the seasons. Last I knew dean wanted to kill himself, but wasn’t cause of his promise to sam, and sam was contemplating his new life while watching dean’s. I guess I was looking for something more than the low-key reunion which occured. I wanted at least rage that no one told dean, but got more of a single pissed off face. I wanted more of an emotional reason behind sam’s decision to leave dean be, but got more of a cold decision response. It was like these were just two people who closely knew each other once, but went onto their own lives, instead of two brothers who live together, fought together, saved people together, and died for each other.
In addition, Sam didn’t seem himself to me, but I have a feeling its because of the campbells. I’m interested to see where that is going.
Overall though, this season’s opener did its job and got me interested in what’s to come. I’m especially interested in what dean will decide to do. It seems like he was preparing his goodbyes for lisa and ben, but it doesn’t seem like he wants to join sam anytime soon. I’m curious as to what his plans for the future are.
PS- I totally agree with simon in pretty much everything
Get back to classic rock?
Bob Seger IS classic rock.
I guess I meant more of what was usually used for a season premiere.
Like the ever classic Supernatural band of choice to kick start a season- AC/DC
Thank you for your comment and for pointing out that flaw.
The Campbells seem interesting to me… not in an ‘I immediately know WHAT makes them interesting’ sort of way, but more of a ‘Hmmm I don’t know anything about them… do go on’ sort of way. I think a lot of that one guy’s arrogance comes from the fact that A.) he’d never met Dean or seen him in action, and B.) Dean’s been domesticated for a year, and even if he was the best damn hunter in the world before, he’d have gotten a bit rusty now, though his response to that arrogance on his distant relative’s part was awesome. <3
I think the same thing with that Djin serum thing, hum hum hum… intriguing..
I'm curious to know what G-pa Campbell could teach Sam and Dean, since it makes sense that he'd know, if not more, then at least some things John wouldn't have [such is how life is].
Also, the way he came back, though it's still a mystery, is cool with me because Sam also came back mysteriously, and this thing opens up the possibility – who else has come back, be they good or bad?
And having their family around kinda reminded me of 99 Problems – 'So that's what it's like' 'What?' 'Having back up'
I also like Lisa and Ben and I really want them to stay, and had been worried that they'd get a different kid to play Ben, but I was soo happy when I saw it was still him! ;u;
I almost want them to at least try to join in the hunting life. *W*
Though I see that can make there be too many characters.. hmhmhm..
O, and I like the new title card, too. 8D Pretty blue glass shattering stuff.
It's funny though, cause on my TV, the S and the L are cut off, so it's read as 'Upernatura' xD
I'm quite excited for the rest of this season! ;uuu;
long comment is long. 8D;;
Don’t think I agree with most of the posters. Of course Dean had to show some loyalty towards Lisa & Ben, and kind of leave Sam behind. Sam made that decision a year ago when he decided not to let Dean know that he is back, along with the Campbell’s and Bobby’s okay. I think Sera is setting up a season-long tension – between your blood family and the new family you make out of love. I see it as synonymous with growing up and feeling a closer bond with the woman/child you love.
Also think we have definitely been given hints that there is something wrong both with the Campbells and with Sam. It’s in the eyes. I’m seeing something strange there – something not quite human. More whites showing or some kind of glowing. I caught it in two different scenes – one where Sam was alone and one near the end of the show when grandpop was alone and made a strange face. Look forward to finding out where the season is going. Also hope to see Castiel soon – he’s one of my favourite parts of the show.
well.. I loved the premiere, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, that kept me thinking about the ep. There’s something really wrong with Sam… He didn’t demostrate any emotion at all during the episode, even when he asked Dean to get back hunting.
About the campbell’s, I guess Sera wants them to be forgetable.
Well, let’s see what comes next. I’m anxious already!
MissSuperCube here, sorry for the delay in checking this out. I cannot deny the things you have said here, I think I was just more put off by the Campbells then others so I let it ruin the entire episode for me. I forgot that there were some good moments.
I did giggle at the Yorkie, squealing about Yellow Fever to my husband’s amusement. And I noticed the same thing when Sam and Dean hugged, how Sam just didn’t seem right and I think “they know the emotion should be there and how it’s supposed to look like, but they just can’t feel it” summarized Sam’s expression perfectly.
I was actually not at all surprised when Bobby already knew about Sam, or how they decided to keep Dean in the dark. I’m not happy about it either, but it is something they would do. No cookies for them!
I also adore Lisa and Ben, and I have never liked anyone for Dean before, so I hope they manage to not follow the cliche and die. Before the premiere I thought they were for sure doomed, now I’m not so sure. I would love a stray from the norm with that. There has yet to be a main female character to survive the boys, other than MEG, and who wants to include her, right?
Those Campbells, though? They can die any time please.
At first i say that i like your way of writing.
Concerning the premiere i think people are too critical. I think it’s absolutely natural that Sam and Dean are not so close like beore. This can’t happen for a minute. It’s still the first episode and i’m sure everything is going to be okay with the brothers. Like i said they need time. It’s not easy for Dean, nor yet Sam. Please fans, give Supernatural a chance, you can’t expect miracles in the very first episode. I believe Sara and co know what they’re doing.
Me, personally loved the premiere!
Great summarization of the episode. We are seeing a whole new side to Sam and Dean and while I’m a little uncomfortable with these new sides I think we are supposed to be.
I’m sure Sam had to learn real quick in the cage to not show emotions. And Dean, well, I agree, he has every right to be pissed to find out the brother he died for has been alive for a year. It takes a great show to get this kind of reaction from fans whether the reactions are good or bad.
This season premiere showed that Supernatural is still one of the best shows around; it would have been more worrisome had people not had any reaction. I can’t wait to see where the guys take us this season and see how things work out. Soooo many questions and it’s going to take some time to get them all answered and I can’t wait for the ride!!
I did enjoy the episode, but I can’t lose the eerie feeling of something missing. The emotions for one were not there. I expected Dean to be alot more angry at Sam and Bobby. I expected a few punches and more yelling. Not just a pissed off look. Thats not like Dean. I dont like the new Dean. I’m Hoping we get to see the old Dean soon. Castiel was also very missed in the episode. I cant shake the feeling though that I think Lucifer is one of the Cambells (gramps)lol. I wonder why if they brought Samuel back why John could have not been brought back to. Or why Gramps instead of their mother? Just alot of confusion here lol. And yes, Sam seems very different. I dont see any emotion coming from him at all. When Sam and Dean hugged, it just felt empty.
