The very first woman to grace our Up and coming stars corner is the lovely Lauren Socha. For those of you who don’t know who she is (shame on you), Lauren is currently playing Kelly Bailey in Misfits, the UK hit show that garnered a huge fan-base worldwide after only 2 seasons. Dressing like a chav and possesing quite a distinct accent, Kelly comes accross as dangerous and tomboyish, but she hides a heart of gold behind all that smoke and mirrors.
Lauren managed to bring the complexity of the character to the screen in a way that made her character one of the most popular ones in the series. But she is no stranger to acting in demanding roles, movies such as The Unloved, for which she received a BAFTA nomination, Five Daughters and Scummy Man, a short film available on YouTube for viewing, have put her on the map as one of the most talented actresses of her generation.
In 2010 she was nominated for a BAFTA and she was finally rewarded for her talent in 2011 when she won the prized Best Supporting Actress award at only 21 for her role in Misfits. Despite being honoured with such a prestigious award at such a young age, Lauren seems to be the same down to earth person she was before becoming part of the young and famous club.
She still loves her dog Finley, she is nice to her fans on Twitter, she is streaming live videos to please the hungry masses who demand informations on all aspects of her life and work and she doesn’t flaunt her award (at least no more flaunting than needed, she did win a BAFTA after all, that deserves a little bragging). If you’ve read any other articles on this site you already know that people lose brownie points for being conceited, she still has her whole cookie jar.
If she looks somewhat familiar (as it happened to me) but you don’t know who she reminds you of, you might want to check out Michael Socha, her older brother, who played Tom in another favourite of mine Being Human. It seems talent runs in the family.
We’ll keep an eye out for any new information on Lauren, until then, best of luck to her and keep up the good job! Perhaps in a few years time we’ll meet here again and chat abour her Oscar nomination/win.
