Not too long ago I began watching The Vampire Diaries again, admittedly, not out of interest for the ever present, never ending love triangle between Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), but for Klaus (Joseph Morgan), the psychotic hybrid that helped the show grow in one season more than it’s usual stories ever did. Despite my initial dislike for the teenage drama that I thought a hundred year old vampires would be safe from, the show wasn’t half bad, I actually found myself anticipating each new episode, thinking about the show at random points during the day. And then it all went downhill with the last two episodes that have generated more hate than even Tumblr could handle. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story here it goes. Take one human girl, Elena, add two vampire men – Stefan and Damon, mix with some witchcraft, ghosts and werewolves and you get what I’m talking about. Each season ended with a bang, but this one seemed to end more with a whimper than anything else. For a season and a half we’ve been told that there was one being that couldn’t possibly be defeated, [...]

A while back I watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, based on Hunter S. Thompson‘s book. I was impressed, I won’t deny it. It was a brilliant movie that gave me the opportunity to laugh, to cringe, to react at something other than pretty faces. Considering it was a movie with Johnny Depp, you would expect that, but he was unrecognizable. The Rum Diary is based on yet another Hunter S. Thompson book, this time a less trippy experience, detailing the changes that occur in the way our lead character, played by Johnny Depp, sees the world around him. When it first came on in the cinema, I decided I had to see it. It had the aforementioned Johnny Depp, it was based on a Hunter S. Thompson novel, it was bound to be good. I had this review on a shelf for a while, wondering what did I actually think of the movie? Was it good? Was it not? I actually went to watch it again in a more appropriate environment for this type of movie, a nice old fashioned cinema where there were maybe five more people in the theatre. The verdict came in, I did in fact like [...]

It has a certain ring to it, doesn’t it? Considering how popular the movies are with audiences of all ages, it’s not surprising that a game has been developed and it was a long time coming. Following a successful comic book series, a video game was the next logical step. If you want to learn more about it, all you have to do is attend the SXSW(South by South West festival) in Austin, Texas on March 11th. The game was developed by Critical Mass Interactive, whose president (Matt Scibilia) will be there alongside The Saints, to offer fans who are present all the needed information about the game and to discuss its development. In case you’re already worrying about how much money you’ll have to spend to get in, let me put your mind at ease: it’s a FREE event. Just pop by the Palmer Events Centre on the set date: March 11 and you’ll get the chance to join Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery and David Della Rocco in a panel discussion about the movies, their current projects, you’ll get a first look at the teaser trailer reveal of the new Boondock Saints video game and you’ll even get to ask those [...]

I hate hiatuses. There is no reason for my deep hatred towards them, other than the fact that they cut in half most of my favourite shows and give me way to much time to develop theories (one crazier than the other) about what might happen next, only to have them disproved at a later date. Hiatus is hell for most of us, especially when storylines aren’t nicely tied up with a purple ribbon to keep us happy. As you can see from this article, I’m not the only one to feel this way. One show that entered its Hellatus recently is The Walking Dead, the hit show that put AMC on the map for people who otherwise would’ve ignored the channel. In case you’re unfamiliar with this show, you’d better catch up fast, it’s brilliant, albeit a little slow paced. Unlike most shows that love to end on a pretty cliffhanger note each time they take a break, I felt that The Walking Dead wrapped up quite nicely. The second season is twice as long as the first, there are still quite a lot of loose ends to tie before the grand finale, but hopefully we’ll have everything served [...]

As you might know, or really should know, some 11 years ago, Troy Duffy brought to our screens the cult film - The Boondock Saints, a compelling tale of two brothers who take justice in their own hands and deliver us from evil, all in the name of God. With a wonderful cast – Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as the two vigilante brothers, Willem Dafoe, David Della Rocco and Billy Conn0lly, to name a few, the movie was expected to be a hit. But due to executive meddling and a great deal of controversy due to its violence it was denied the chance to shine. Thankfully, the fans spread the word and now the movie is a cult favourite. If you don’t trust me, ask all those fans sharing tattoos as those owned by the brothers in the film. With 11 years spent in producing hell and various courts of law, a lot of time passed until the sequel – All Saints Day – but the fans didn’t forget and, after getting a brand new movie, they are asking for more. Until the third one gets made, Troy Duffy and the gang are throwing us a bone, a delicious [...]

Last year The Walking Dead had only 6 episode to show for a whole season and it wrapped most of its storylines quickly, despite the seemingly slow pace of the show. With 13 episodes this season they seem to take their sweet time to provide us with much needed information, but is that really a bad thing? Having a sense of suspense seems like the thing the creators and actors aim for, we might live in the century of speed, it doesn’t mean it’s the best thing to have happened to us. But back to the show. I apologise for the absence of reviews and recaps for the last two episodes – Save the Last One and Cherokee Rose – here’s a short briefing on what happened in them: The merry band of misfits reaches the Hershel farm and meet a man so affable I keep expecting him to turn evil (Hershel himself) they are helped with Carl, but since he can’t survive without a lot of medical equipment that isn’t available, Otis – the man who shot Carl and Shane go off on a search for them at the local high-school. Then Shane turns completely evil and shoots Otis [...]

As you should know already, the hit AMC show The Walking Dead had its second season premiere last week and it sure started with a bang – a herd of walkers, a missing Sophia and it ended with Carl being shot. Way to keep us all wired since the very start! The second episode had a much slower pace than the first, but it still managed to pack enough action into it to keep us happy for another week. Let’s see what happened, in short: Sophia is still missing and while everyone is becoming despondent the least likely character to offer a pep talk – Daryl Dixon(Norman Reedus) – manages to make them focus with one of the best lines of the episode – We’re going to locate that little girl. And she’s going to be just fine. Am I the only zen one around here? Well, Daryl, Zen is not a word I would’ve associated with you, but hey, as long as you keep that rat pack moving forward I am behind you 100%. Perhaps you could Feng Shui Dale’s RV? Back to more serious business – Carl was shot and despite Rick’s desperate attempts to help him, there [...]

BBC 3, usually looked upon as the “less cool” BBC brother is in fact bringing forth one of the best series of the fall – The Fades. The entertainment business is filled with horror stories, vampires, zombies, werewolves, ghosts, but let’s face it, an abundance of similar things is not a guarantee of quality shows. The Fades manages to stay away from the more popular versions of this type of show with clever writing, an abundance of obscure and not so obscure references – Mork and Mindy anyone? – along with a compelling cast that will really keep you glued to your seat for each episode. The show premiered five weeks ago and for the late risers, it means there is only one more episode to go: the grand finale that will air this Wednesday at 21:00 on BBC3. But let’s see why I’m so hyped about this show? Paul, a seventeen year old, discovers one day that he has special powers, mainly visions of a really dark future. Plot might seem familiar to you (Fallen comes to mind), but it all similarities end there. These visions don’t make him particularly happy and he is quite tormented, rather than simply [...]

It seems that the age of Vampires and Zombies has finally come to an end. The world is shifting towards fairy tales based tv series. Or is it? Once Upon A Time and Grimm are two series that will air shortly before Halloween and have a similar source of inspiration. Fairy tales. I think the comparison stops there since one of them seems more child friendly whereas the other seems to be more adult oriented. Also, one of them is good and the other one…not so much. There is even a poll as to which series gets cancelled first. My money is on Once Upon A Time, but since Grimm is on NBC, famed for cancelling shows that never got a chance to properly find their niche, there are no guarantees. Let’s see what the hype is all about, shall we? I have just finished watching Grimm, a show about a young man who discovers he is part of a family of hunters of the supernatural (yes, it does sound a bit like that show about two brothers) and that now he has to protect the world from the bad guys. I have also just gave up watching Once Upon [...]

I decided to give this new series a chance. Why not? It had dinosaurs, a falling apart Earth, time travel and Jason O’Mara(but that’s another story). Cue the pilot episode and subsequent disappointment. To be fair, the plot of the show has quite a lot of promise – humanity has basically destroyed itself through years of pollution and thoughtless exploitation of Earth’s resources. People now live in small apartments with no windows, there are no trees in sight and everything is scarce or toxic, most important in the latter category – the very air they breathe. Rules have been enforce to control everything, including birth rate. All in all it’s not a pretty picture. Jim (Jason O’Mara) and Elisabeth Shannon (Shelly Con) have broken this rule and are living in constant fear of discovery. Can you guess where I’m going? After being discovered, Jim ends up in jail and Elisabeth gets invited (some three years later, mind you) to join the Terra Nova project. This is where logic got a little wonky, admittedly it is a tv show, but still. Scientists have discovered a rift in time, a bit like a pocket, completely isolated from the regular time stream, where [...]

By Sally Brown I have read all of Dorothy Koomsons previous novels and they are all amazing reads. This book, I am pleased to say, also falls under the category “amazing”! This story is about Libby, a beautician, who meets a man named Jack in a car showroom but unfortunately they do not start off on the right foot. Jack is a widower and his dead wife Eve is rarely mentioned and when she is Jack tends to become distant from Libby. Jack is persistent however and finally manages to win Libby round and finally he wins her heart, they get together and marry. A terrible accident occurs one night and Libby is seriously injured. Whilst in recooperating Libby is forced to rethink their relationship and question whether Jack is still in love with Eve and whether he has ever truly loved Libby at all. Libby decides to find out as much as she can about Eve and a chance discovery helps Libby to find out things about Eve and Jack that could have devastating consequences and which could see Libby ending up like the first and maybe the only woman Jack has ever loved….Eve. This book is moving, gripping [...]

By Sally Brown This film is about Carly who is part of the dance crew Jay 2-0. The crew are aiming to win the UK Street Dance Championship which can then take the winners to New York to represent the UK. The leader of the crew and Carly’s boyfriend, Jay, ditches the crew weeks before the final and so it falls on Carly to lead the crew to win. They struggle to find somewhere to practice and this causes unease amongst the crew and they start to fall apart. When Carly is offered the chance of a free dance rehearsal space she jumps at it but it has a clause attached. The room is at a prestigious ballet school and in return for free use of the room Carly has to incorporate five of the ballet students into the crew. They have to deal with their differences and work together to ensure that they win the competition. Some awesome dance moves, a great soundtrack and some of the UK’s best dance talent including Diversity, Flawless and George Sampson makes this an enjoyable film. Step Up it isn’t but still good to watch. Here’s the trailer for Street Dance, take a [...]

By Sally Brown Ok so a while ago there was a film released called “Scream” and it was awesome. Then along came “Scream 2″ and it was ok and finally came “Scream 3″ which was a bit rubbish really and I thought that was it. So imagine my shock when I heard that “Scream 4″ was being made. I decided not to go watch it at the movies because I didn’t want another disappointment after the last film. Being a sucker for David Arquette and a horror fan I decided to give it a chance now its out on DVD. The film starts in classic Scream style which was pleasantly surprising. Neve Campbell is back as Sidney Prescott and Sid is back in Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she meets up with Dewey who is now Sheriff and Gale who is now Dewey’s wife. Sids return to Woodsboro also heralds the return of “Ghostface” which puts her, her friends and the townsfolk of Woodsboro in danger. There are several murders and Sid, Dewey and Gale go in search of Ghostface and in true Scream style there is a shock in store when the killer is [...]

**HERE BE SPOILERS** One of my favourite tv shows returned with a new season and also with quite a bang. After a season of hit and miss episodes, the show came back bigger and better than before. I admit I was having very low expectations and I have successfully managed to avoid all form of spoilers and trailers until the episode aired last night so I was quite blown away by how the story unfolded. We had the chance to ease ourselves back into the lives of the Winchester duo and their faithful sidekick Bobby (yeah, I know, he’s not a sidekick) with a slow start. Let’s just say it all went kaboom after a few minutes of relative peace and quiet. What with Sam having intermitent hallucinations of Hell, Castiel going on a righteous fight against those he deemed unworthy of God(or of himself in this instance) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) being reinstated as King of Hell, it was bound to be exciting and it sure was. The acting was superb – Jared Padalecki was amazing as a haunted by his time in the cage Sam, Jensen Ackles shined as a disappointed friend who was humiliated and mocked and as [...]

The very first woman to grace our Up and coming stars corner is the lovely Lauren Socha. For those of you who don’t know who she is (shame on you), Lauren is currently playing Kelly Bailey in Misfits, the UK hit show that garnered a huge fan-base worldwide after only 2 seasons. Dressing like a chav and possesing quite a distinct accent, Kelly comes accross as dangerous and tomboyish, but she hides a heart of gold behind all that smoke and mirrors. Lauren managed to bring the complexity of the character to the screen in a way that made her character one of the most popular ones in the series. But she is no stranger to acting in demanding roles, movies such as The Unloved, for which she received a BAFTA nomination, Five Daughters and Scummy Man, a short film available on YouTube for viewing, have put her on the map as one of the most talented actresses of her generation. In 2010 she was nominated for a BAFTA and she was finally rewarded for her talent in 2011 when she won the prized Best Supporting Actress award at only 21 for her role in Misfits.
By Sally Brown I have always liked Dannii Minogue both as a singer and an actress and more recently as a judge on the UK X Factor. When I heard that she was writing an autobiography I wondered if she would have enough interesting stories to make the book a worthwhile read. Well Ms Minogue does not disappoint! The book starts with tales of her childhood and of being the youngest of the Minogues. She was closer to her brother when she was growing up as she was a tomboy and was always up to one scrape or another however she states that at an early age she had an eye for fashion and this was reflected in her teens when she had a sold out fashion range. She talks about her break into showbusiness in some detail starting with Young Talent Time in Australia which then lead to her recording her first pop album whilst landing the part of Emma Jackson in Home and Away. It was here she was to meet her husband to be Julian McMahon but unfortunately young love hit a few major problems and landed Dannii in a financial mess. She talks in depth about [...]

The latest Marvel film has been expected for quite a long time, by some with aprehension, by others with excitement. I was part of the aprehensive bunch. I am not as familiar with Captain America as I am with other Marvel superheroes, but I have to say the movie painted quite a clear picture of who he is and what he does. Let’s see what it was about. Young Steve Rogers, a skinny boy/man wants nothing more than to join the army, battle the evil forces and keep the world safe. Alas his sickly nature and lack of physical atributes make him a very unlikely candidate for the US army. After being rejected for the nth time, he decides to give it another go, even though his best friend Bucky warns him that he is not going to find whatever he’s looking for in the military. Hearing his passionate speech about freedom and his desire to serve since he is not willing to do any less than those around him, a misterious scientist recruits him for a secret project that will ultimately turn him into Captain America. The movie, though dramatic and prone to pulling our heart strings on a [...]

A movie that split people up between haters and adorers, Super 8 has managed to catch my eye and I must say I am impressed. The movie, which benefits from the involvement of J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg, is a combination between a tale of growing up fast and staying a child forever, spiced up with alien abductions and family feuds. Perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick, but when I left the theater I felt like I watched a modern/sci-fi/adventure version of Romeo and Juliet and that wasn’t bad at all. A quick synopsis of the film – you have a bunch of kids trying to make a movie, one of them – Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney)- recently lost his mother in a horrific accident and is head over heels for the girl – Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning)- whose father, Louis (Ron Eldard) is accused of being at fault for said accident(by the boy’s dad, Jackson Lamb, played by Kyle Chandler). It’s misplaced blame, but when you grieve it’s never easy. In order to make the film – a zombie flick that Charles (Ryley Grifftihs) plans to send to a movie competition – they need to keep [...]

Took me long enough to get to writing this, perhaps because like most fans I’ve spend my time crying into my pillow that the adventure is over. Ten years out of all our lives were given a more worthy ending than I had expected. I was worried that they won’t do the final book justice and that we’ll have too many special effects, what with the “magic”of 3D and forget the actual story. It wasn’t the case, each effect perfectly complemented the storyline, making it quite possibly one of the best movies of the franchise and most definitely one of the best films I’ve seen recently. I am not sure the rest of this review might contain spoilers, since most people have read that “big encyclopedia of spoilers”we like to call the book series by J.K.Rowling. However, for those that didn’t read it, SPOILERS might follow. The film picked up where the first part left of, the search for the Hocruxes in a last, desperate, attempt to destroy Voldemort’s link to the mortal plane. Hogwarts and the magical world had been turned into a land of fear and prejudice, all with Voldemort’s blessing, but our heroic trio hasn’t given up [...]

By Sally Brown When I heard that they were making a film of one of my favourite childhood TV shows I was really excited however, after watching the first half hour, my excitement was short lived. To those who have never seen the TV show it would be an ok action movie with some good stunts and a few explosions. To those of us old enough to remember the TV show it is a bit disappointing to say the least. All the fun simply dies away after a few jokes, mainly from Copely as Murdoch. The film stars Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, Sharlto Copely as Murdoch and Quinton Jackson as BA Baracus. The actors try to stay true to the original characters however they just fail to hit the mark. The A Team starts with how the four men came together to be an elite army team who after several missions are stationed in a special forces unit stationed in Iraq. Hannibal is contacted by a CIA agent who states that Iraqi’s possess US treasury plates that could be used to make US dollars. The CIA agent wants the A Team to steal the plates and the cash [...]

I had been wanting to see this film for a while now, but with it’s limited release it proved a difficult task. I finally got around to it and I wasn’t disappointed. Robert Redford’s The Conspirator presents a page in the history of the United States that few are aware it even existed. The story of Mary Surrat, accused of having conspired alongside a group of men – one of them her son John – to assassinate president Lincoln. She went on to become the first woman in the US history to be executed through hanging. A barely recognizable(to me) Robin Wright portrays Mary Surrat, the woman accused of having participated in the conspiracy, but the question regarding her innocence or guilt is never answered. Perhaps because history never answered it. She does an amazing job at bringing Mary to life, a woman so hellbent on protecting her somewhat cowardly son that she renounces her own life for it. James McAvoy, who portrays Frederick Aiken, Mary’s lawyer does as good of a job as ever. His character has so much intensity you start feeling his despair when he faces the wall of vengeance everyone else has erected, banning a fair [...]

He’s ready to seek his revenge on Dorothy (Mr. D) Macha, a violence-prone casino owner who sent Jake to prison. He humiliates Macha in front of Macha’s lieutenants, leaves, and keels over. Doctors tell him he has a rare disease and will die in three days; Macha also puts a hit out on him. Loan sharks, Zack and Avi, demand Jake’s cash and complete fealty in return for protection. Jake complies, and through narration and flashbacks, we watch him through at least three days of schemes, danger, and redemption. Who is his greatest enemy? The enemy is in your head!
I must admit Jane Eyre is probably one of my least favourite books ever. I never could get into the whole – let’s love Jane cause she’s awesome – bandwagon. The only reason I decided to give the movie a shot(and it’s the first Jane Eyre movie I’ve ever seen) was because Michael Fassbender was playing Rochester and he was awesome as Magneto in X-Men First Class. The movie wasn’t that bad, if a little dull and choppy at some stages. Perhaps I forgot most of my Jane Eyre reading, but the whole romance of theirs seemed awfully rushed. For a film that spans about 2 hours, the two lovebirds – Rochester and Jane spend a minute amount of time together, which makes their love just a little jarring. The book is on the long side so trying to shrink it up to fill only 2 hours worth of film is bound to be a little hit and miss. This version of the film was on the miss side for the most part. The film maintains the sequence of events of the books – Jane’s childhood, her life as a nanny, living at the Rochester mansion and then meeting St. [...]

Took me forever to pick up my energy and start writing this, possibly because I am still unsure about how I feel about the film. Do I feel anything? Nothing? Well, let’s see a short synopsis of what’s been going on in the film – beware, some spoilers might find themselves below. We find out the Space Race was just a clever ploy used by the government of the USA to facilitate research on the Moon where a massive object has landed. Neil Armstrong and his colleague – whose name hardly anyone knows, but we’ll give him a bit of credit – Buzz Aldrin discover an Autobot ship that was supposedly the last hope of the Autobots in their battle against the Decepticons. We find out by bits and pieces that Sentinel Prime, voiced by Leonard Nymoy, has been sent with that ship on a mission to secure the weapon that was supposed to revive the glory of Cybertron and forever destroy the evil Decepticons. Since nothing ever goes well for Optimus and the rest of the Autobots they have to face treason, death and war before anything even resembling peace can be achieved. OK, sounds like a great plot. So [...]

Ok, so this film isn’t new by any means, but it’s new for me and I have to say it actually moved me to tears. It’s a sweet piece on human emotion that manages not to fall in the overly sweet cliches that are so common nowadays. Mary Stuart Masterson who directed this kept a steady pace that allowed every single actor in the film to shine. Staring Kirsten Steward as Georgia and Aaron Stanford as Beagle, the movie weaves a wonderful love story that will make you want to reach for those tissues you keep near whenever you watch a movie that will turn on the water-works. Here’s a brief synopsis. Georgia(Stewad) suffers from Frederick’s Ataxia and feels alienated from her mother who leaves off the impression she uses Georgia to escape her own feelings of futility. She meets Beagle (Stanford) who has spent his past years caring for his ailing mother and who feels generally overlooked by the world he keeps at bay and decides he would be perfect to start a romance with. Neither of them are ready for what’s to come, but that doesn’t stop them from trying, which makes this movie all the more compelling. Together [...]

You guys remember the kinda creepy Jeepers Creepers? Yeah? Good. The directer of that film – Victor Salva has decided to bring the thrill back into our homes, but in theaters before (that way you can still sleep in your own bed and pretend you aren’t scared) with his upcoming film Rosewood Lane. Take a look at the press release for the movie: The story follows McGowan as she plays Doctor Sonny Blake, a radio talk show psychiatrist, when she moves back to her childhood home after her alcoholic father dies. Once back in her old neighborhood she discovers the local paperboy is a frightening and cunning young sociopath that targeted her father and now targets her. When the boy starts calling her show and recites eerie nursery rhymes, an unnerving game of cat-and-mouse begins. When the game escalates, she suddenly finds herself in a terrifying all out war, one that forces her to redefine her ideas of good and evil, and has her fighting to stay alive. As you figured out already, Rose McGowan stars in this film as Sonny Blake, our protagonist. She is joined by Ray Wise, Judson Mills Lauren Velez and Sonny Martinelli to name a [...]

After a long anticipation I finally managed to see the latest X-Men movie at the cinema and I was blown away. I am going to rally with those that name it one of the best movies from the franchise, it felt like it was refreshed. With new takes on old characters and the introduction of some other characters (new to the movie adaptations, but the connoisseurs will have recognized them) First Class was a breath of fresh air. It starts slow, but bear with it, because when it kick-starts the action you will be glued to the screen. Without giving to much away since the movie is still in theaters, here are a few highlights of the film. We learn a little more about the history of Eric Lehnsherr/Magneto, played brilliantly by Michael Fassbender, the pivotal moment for the development of his powers being an encounter with Karl Schmit/Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon – who shouldn’t have attempted German). Shaw becomes in young Eric’s mind Dr. Frankenstein who turns him into a monster and we all know how that story ended, the outcome is very similar here. In a less gloomy part of the world, while young Erik is imprisoned and experimented [...]

Well, it’s been long time coming, time to tear down the SyFy movie of last week. Red Faction Origins is based on the Red Faction games, I would tell you more about them had I ever played them, but since I didn’t I’ll try to look wise by keeping my mouth shut. If you are like me and have never touched the game, have no fear, you won’t need to know much about it in order to understand the movie’s plot. Let’s see what it was about, shall we? Staring Robert Patrick, Brian J. Smith and Danielle Nicolet, the movie tells the story of Jake Mason (Smith) who stumbles upon a huge plot to turn the two warring factions that inhabit Mars – the Reds and the Marauders against one another. He also discovers his sister, whom he thought dead for over 10 years is alive and well, working for the enemy. During his quest to find her and bring her back home he is joined by Tess de la Vega (Nicolet) an apparent genius who comes across as a bit bipolar at times. She goes from being scared at seeing a dead body to wishing she was part of [...]

It was a hot summer day that I decided to watch this film, a film that has more critics than fans, but the fans are vocal enough to cover whatever the more “educated and elevated” among us have to throw at us concerning their opinions. The movie is the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s book with the same title, regarding the adventures or misadventures he has experienced during a psychedelic trip to Las Vegas accompanied by his friend, renamed Gonzo to protect his identity. The movie is insane, really, there isn’t another word to describe it. For those impatient enough not to watch it until the end it will never be more than jumbled images thrown on screen, feebly connected by the voice-over commentary by Duke. For those who have enough patience to bear through the constant insanity it becomes the classic tale of two men who have defied every rule [...]

Danielle Nicolet has been around for quite a while, you might be familiar with her from things such as Heartland or The Starter Wife but her career started in the early nineties in Family Matters. Since then all her roles took her one step further in developing her abilities. Today she is about to show us how well she does in Red Faction, a new SyFy channel pilot based on the game with the same name. But have no fear, we’re all invited whether we know the game or not. We had the opportunity to interview Danielle and this is what she had to say related to the premiere of the show and her future plans. 1. Your acting has been extremely versatile – drama, comedy, fantasy and sci-fi. but this will be the first video game adaptation you do.Gamers are notorious for their attitude towards TV or movie adaptations of their favourites. Are you in any way afraid of how it will be received? I am a little bit anxious about the gamers. We really wanted to provide the existing fans a movie that would enhance their gaming experience. Origins makes it more personal, gives them some history and [...]

Anthony Ingruber is quite well known around the world of Youtube for his uncannily accurate depiction of such artist like Robert Downey Jr., Harrison Ford and many others, some even say he might be the latter’s long lost son, based on the similarity between the two. Since he entered the glamorous world of showbiz, Anthony has been keeping busy staring in short films (most recently Halo: Faith) and in movies, like Disney’s Channel – Avalon High. His part was small in that film, yet he is the one actor that stood out among the rest of the cast, being one of the most talked about character in the movie. Talk about making a good first impression. We were lucky enough to get an interview from Mr. Ingruber, here is what he had to say. GA: Anthony, you were made famous by your YouTube impersonations of various actors – Robert Downey, Jr., Harrison Ford. Do you think this might ever hinder your choices in the acting profession? That people might see you solely as an impersonator rather than an actor in your own rights? Anthony Ingruber: I’m very versatile in my acting, so I hope I’m not seen purely as a [...]

Last night I finally had the chance to watch Pirates of the Caribbeans – part 4. I am among the ones that considered the first movie to be absolutely brilliant, the other two not so much, too convoluted, too missing the point at times. But I loved part 4 of the franchise. Perhaps I am childish, but I loved the return to the less complicated storyline, without the over cluttering romance between Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). This story brought about some changes in the characters’ dynamics, we had Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) being actually civil to Jack(Johnny Depp) and not trying to stab him in the back at every chance, he did have bigger fish to catch though – maybe in part five they’ll be at each other’s throats again? – we got to see Teague (Keith Richards) again (that’s Jack’s father in case you didn’t know) and we got to see a new character – Penelope Cruz’s Angelica, daughter of the dreaded Blackbeard(Ian McShane). I wasn’t very convinced by her character. If she isn’t in the next movie, which is doubtful -but one can hope, I will be very happy. She looked out of place and completely confused [...]

I have one word for this episode WOW! Yes, it really needed to be in caps. I didn’t review last weeks episode because I wanted to see the whole story through first, but here’s a little recap of last time’s episode. The Doctor, Rory and Amy reach a monastery that turns out to be a factory where instead of human workers Gangers are used. That would be Dopplegangers of the original workers, used for dangerous jobs. They are deemed to be disposable so no one gives them a second thought as acid burns through them. Lovely race, aren’t we? Since they are a bit ticked of at being treated as usable and abusable slaves, they have a bit of an uprising started by Gen’s ganger, a rather lovely woman until she goes on a power trip. Some things go boom and bump and we get to have a Doctor Ganger as well. A dashing Doctor ganger if he may say so himself (and he does). Matt Smith playing two instances of the Doctor was amazing. I remember the now long passed days when I was a bit unsure about his ability to make the Doctor his own. But I guess [...]

The two part finale of Supernatural came and went but it left destruction in its wake. I am not joking, fans were devastated, Twitter was like a pillaged village after the barbarians invaded, the fangirls cries were heard worldwide…Yeah, all in all it was something you could not ignore. In order to keep the spoilers to a minimum(a task at which I fail constantly) I’ll refrain from leaking to much information. Let’s see what happened though. As we know Castiel has been on the fence between good and evil for quite a while, his dealings with Crowley had most fans screaming in dismay, but his actions were justified by the – he is cute so he must be good logic – and people moved on. Alas, things were not so rosy after the finale. In the first part of the night – Let it Bleed, Castiel was more than unhelpful when Lisa and Ben (yes, they brought them back yet again) were kidnapped by Crowley’s goons. Remember last time when Cas threatened Crowley and ordered him to leave the boys alone? Yeah, he didn’t include other loved ones so Crowley took the family unit Dean worked hard to build and [...]

It took me a while to get around writing this, mostly because I wanted to wrap my head around the events in this episode. Don’t get me wrong, I know the historical events, but the way the actors of the show bring them to life is ever surprising. In The Art of War we finally got more emotions from Jeremy Irons, locked inside his own fantasies of greatness and of being the follower of Christ on earth, Rodrigo showed his own vanning hopes of keeping the Papal chair. His disappointment and feelings of abandonment regarding the entirety of Rome and his cardinals actually move you, however ruthless you know Rodrigo to be. His moment of realisation when he finally figure out that Juan is not the war expert he thought him to be is also moving, hindsight is always 20/20. I think even Cesare was shocked at his father’s admission. The fast approach of the French armies have seeded the fear in the hearts of the Cardinals who have decided to jump ship. The Cardinals are mostly background characters hardly ever coming out of their chorus and show us their acting abilities, but with this episode each of them got [...]

I need to stop repeating myself, but I have to say it yet again – Game of Thrones just keeps on getting better with each episode. The plot thickens so to speak, characters get more developed and honestly if it hadn’t already been renewed I would be outside the network with a pitchfork and some torches. This week we went deeper with the adventure, learning more about each character and their relationships. They amped up the gore(and the sex for the curious) and they had me at the edge of my seat with every sword fight. And they were plenty. The Hound and his brother – I admit I am starting to like the Hound, the sob story helped – then lady Stark’s party against the thieves, ending with the epic battle between Jamie and Ned Stark. A short synopsis of the episode – Lady Stark(Michelle Fairley) is still taking Tyrion (Peter Dynklage) to her sister’s place, they end up ambushed and she begins to see the reasoning that might prove him innocent. Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) is upset that his mother left before his awakening and questions her love. I have to admit I have the utmost admiration for that [...]

My hands have been itching forever to get my hands on a DVD with Norman Reedus‘ 3 short films, I’ve only heard good things about them and thanks to a wonderful person (yes, Jane, you!) I had a chance to get them and I jumped right at the opportunity to watch them. Let’s see what we have: The Rub is as described on the tin – visually stunning. The short film will make you lose all sense of time and reality, however unlikely that may seem. I was alternating between believing it is all a fantasy, a dream or a nightmare that the characters were experiencing. It shows the less pretty side of anonymous sex in a way that will make you hold your breath hoping that at the end it will all become clear. It does and somehow the reality is far more disturbing than the fantasy, however grotesque it may have seemed. Hardly a word is spoken throughout the film but each word carries so much weight you almost wish it didn’t happen. Few people know how to cherish the words, we tend to toss them around at random and hope for the best, in The Rub it’s [...]

Game of Thrones is steadily building up a fan base even among the people who are previously unacquainted with the books it’s based on. The fact that the quality of the show, the acting and the sets are all top notch does help out a lot. One of the things I love about Game of Thrones is the fact that the character development is superb, no one is forgotten, whether they are being build up like bastards or like heroes, they all get their time in the spot light. Most shows, even the best of them forget the importance of that, especially considering that fans will often get attached to a character that might not be part of the writer’s favourites. Ned Stark is built up so subtly you just know it’s down to great writing and great acting as well. Sean Bean sure pulls brooding yet wise man pretty well. As the man that wears his heart on his sleeve he sure is learning fast to swim with the sharks and boy do they have sharks in the seven kingdoms! Last week’s episode it was a lot about Jon Snow, surprisingly I wasn’t impressed by his endeavours, I just [...]

I admit last week’s episode wasn’t among my favourites from the series, but it seems they finally picked up the pace a little and made one of the best episodes so far. Death on a Pale Horse is a little different from the rest of the episodes, primarily because some things that were merely hinted at in the previous episodes have come to a head such as the Pope’s lack of support from his cardinals, Cesare’s inability to let go, Della Rovere’s obsessive nature and Giovanni Sforza’s lack of honour. During the show we learn that the french king, who we’ve met in the previous episode has gathered up the army and is now invading the various strongholds of modern day Italy. The desperation is practically tangible from Cesare and to a certain extent Rodrigo in light of the impending war (see below my reasoning as to why I didn’t buy his act). The king is a little blood thirsty and his actions are contemptible to say the least. He doesn’t care about white flags or peace offerings as he tramples over bodies. This was one of the more realistic aspects of the episode, the lack of consideration for human life. [...]

Originally on director Sam Raimi’s itinerary, but dropped in order to pursue his Spiderman adaptations, Thor, which was created by editor Stan Lee, writer Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby, has been on the backburner for years. Then when Matthew Vaughn also dropped the project, deciding to helm X Men: First Class and screenwriter, Mark Protosevich’s script had to be trimmed in order to soften the budget to a more manageable amount ($150 million), all hope was lost. Fortunately, Shakespeare fanatic and acclaimed filmmaker, Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet, A Midwinter’s Tale, Henry V), on the eve of the much anticipated megahit, The Avengers, brought the production back to light his rendition, which is penned by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne, and stars the Australian Chris Hemsworth (who prior to starring in 2009’s Star Trek reboot and the underappreciated A Perfect Getaway had worked as a construction worker) and the Oscar-awarding winning actress, Natalie Portman, in the lead. While studying atmospheric disturbances in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, Jane Foster (Portman) and her team of scientists stumble upon a subtle aurora that quickly erupts into a spectacular lightshow. Perplexed, they decide to search the crash site, accidentally ramming their dilapidated [...]

I usually do the whole recap/review thing for every episode, but I skipped a couple – the wild west one and the one where Eve dies somewhat anticlimactically after being a rather preeminent villain for the course of the season. They were both great episode in my opinion (except for the whole Eve thing – she died a bit like Crowley…oh, wait!) building up to the season finale. Not having watched any spoilers I don’t really have any expectations one way or another about the episodes that will end the season, however I had huge expectations about the latest Supernatural installment. We were to find out the story of Castiel(Misha Collins), solve the mystery of Crowley’s(Mark Sheppard) survival and all that and yet I wasn’t satisfied with what I got. First of all, lately Supernatural seems to have turned into a fanfiction of sorts. Each episode makes one part of the fandom or another happy. We get hints of slash between Dean and Castiel, hints of whatever pairing the fans are shipping at the moment, the story alters based on fans desires, which isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s not a good thing either. I feel proud, I have [...]

Since we now have a section for up and coming stars, it seemed only fitting to add young Anthony Guajardo to your list. If you aren’t yet in the know, he has made it to the big leagues when he first appeared on the hit AMC show The Walking Dead. Even though his appearance was rather brief, only 1 episode - Vatos, he became a hit with the fans and he is getting to make quite a name for himself. Now, this baby faced actor has been in “the business” for years, he started way back when he seven years old, you know the age most kids still watch cartoons and dream of becoming superheros. His aspirations towards acting have been around longer than that, apparently he wanted to be an actor when he was five. Talk about perseverance in chasing your dreams. So far Anthony has been in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, though he was uncredited for his appearance and in the aforementioned The Walking Dead where he portrayed a young man struggling for survival in a zombie infested city, with a somewhat confusing rate of success. Not being caught and eaten by zombies should count, getting [...]

Well, Steven Moffat is a genius. I have said it before and I will probably say it again. Day of the Moon was the second part that brought back(with quite a bang) Doctor Who to our screens. Last week, in The Impossible Astronaut, we got to learn of a “new” alien race that has apparently taken residence on Earth, but they are so insidious you can never remember having seen them if you stop looking at them directly. Talk about nightmare fuel. Who better to save the day than The Doctor(Matt Smith)? As usual he has the help of Rory(Arthur Darvill), Amy(Karen Gillan) and River(Alex Kingston). Plus Canton on the side, cause really, Mark Sheppard has to be one of the few British actors to have never been on Doctor Who. Ironically he plays an American. The episode doesn’t quite pick up where it left off last time – the huge cliffhanger with Amy shooting the little girl in the astronaut suit, instead it starts rather suddenly with Amy, Rory and River being one by one killed by Canton. Cue the universe exploding with questions. I have already said the creators of the show(the current ones at least) are geniuses. [...]

The Borgias is in my opinion one of the best period dramas that I have seen in later years, for the past weeks it only got raving reviews from me, but the last episode didn’t really convince me. We learn a little more about Juan who was at best a secondary character throughout the series so far, but his development is rather poorly handled. He is made even less likable – and that’s a feat – considering just how poorly his character was doing up until now. David Oakes is good at playing Juan – ignoring the mullet, but his character is just more and more corrupt and his actor seems unable to draw any sympathy for Juan from me. Considering this is a series about the Borgias where murder is at every corner, plots are weaved to destroy enemies and former friends alike, it is saying something about him. Perhaps I am too picky in my dislike for Juan based on the fact that so far he demonstrated no shred of intelligence, but I had expected better from the writers. He is adamant that he deserves to marry a princess or a queen, rather than a bastard – even [...]

Game of Thrones maintained the same high quality during the second episode as during the first, but it was much easier to keep track of all the different families and characters this time around. We had the chance to learn more about the different disputes for power that take place in the kingdom and we also discover that even the more likable characters hide some unsavory secrets. Last episode ended with a cliffhanger – Bran, the son of Ned was pushed off the wall and his fate was unknown. He has survived, but he has been in a coma ever since the accident. His mother has been by his side day and night, seldomly accepting offers of rest and food. Her reactions were incredibly believable. Many times the maternal love is turned into a caricature in movies and series alike, but here the emotions were portrayed just right. The mother of an “injured cub” is the best way of describing Catelyn(Michelle Fairley) and her suffering. Her pain is somewhat insulted when the one responsible for Bran’s injury comes to commiserate over the pain of losing a child. Cersei is played impeccably by Lena Headey, she looks so innocent and supportive [...]

The Borgias, the show about the original crime family, as it was advertised, made yet another great episode with In Love. Last week we learned a little about the way children were pawned to the highest bidder in order to ensure the power of their parents, this week we learned that the ambition of the Pope(Jeremy Irons) knows no bounds. He plans to do the same thing he did to Lucrezia, marry her to the more suitable to his political ambition man, to his other sons – Juan(David Oakes) and Gioffre. The dream he has at the beginning of the episode – concerning Lucrezia, dead and turned into an angel – seems to have no effect on him whatsoever. The dream sequence finally offered Jeremy Irons his chance to shine, albeit for a brief moment. It seems that he’s portraying Rodrigo as a man with emotions only when he is in the safety of his rooms, alone. During all of his other scenes he plays an affable man who runs away from conflicts and whose lack of facial expression is disconcerting. What I find perfect about this show is the fact that they still try to make the characters sympathetic. [...]

Last night was a big night for whovians all over the place. Doctor Who has returned for it’s sixth series(counting only the seasons from the ninth reincarnation of the epic character) and it was quite a return. The premiere was dedicated to the amazing Elisabeth Sladen, rest in peace Sarah Jane! Just like the start of the Fifth series which saw the introduction of Matt Smith as the New Doctor, this series premiere was mind-blowingly amazing, keeping me glued to my tv screen, screaming at various characters instructions to ensure their survival. But they never listen! Karen Gillan returned in The Impossible Astronaut as well in her role as Amy Pond – one of the most beloved companions after only a season – and since we can’t have Amy without Rory, Arthur Darvill comes back as well. Yeah, top that guys! *SPOILERS BELOW – Don’t advance beyond this point, cause a recap will follow* Amy and Rory are eagerly awaiting for news of the Doctor who has been out of touch for a [...]

François Arnaud has been gracing our screens for the past four weeks in the role of the infamous Cesare Borgia and I have to say I have been muttering under my breath every time I’ve seen him on screen. No one should be able to make a man who is rumoured(and occasionally proven) to have been a devious killer, likable. And yet François does. It’s a show of great talent to be able to build a character that is supposed to be beyond redemption into a character you, more often than not, want to give a hug to. How can you not? He portrays the struggles Cesare has with his actions, he plays on the sibling rivalry and he even shows some daddy issues (or more than some, but you catch my drift.) Francois Arnaud just turned Cesare Borgia – the monster into the everyday man. Could be you, could be any of us. After seeing his performance in The Borgias – and I already said it’s quite a performance – I have decided to do my homework and discover more of Mr. Arnaud’s work.
For many the name of Elisabeth Sladen might spark no recognition, but if I say – Sarah Jane Smith everyone will recognize one of the most iconic companions the Doctor ever had. She was part of the Doctor Who adventures longer than any companion and she touched every generation’s heart with her portrayal. She grew from a young girl to a fulfilled woman and took us on one hell of a ride in the TARDIS. But Elisabeth was more than Sarah Jane, even if that is her most beloved work. She has appeared in theater productions, children’s programs and she always found the time to make the fans happy by attending various conventions. The Sarah Jane Adventures was her own spin-off show from Doctor Who and even though it targeted a less mature audience as opposed to Torchwood – another spin-off, it had plenty of grown-up fans who tuned in each week to get their dose of Sarah Jane and see how she will go about stopping the latest threat to Earth.
I guess like many others I was excited about Game of Thrones coming out this spring. Luckily HBO decided to make it available worldwide right after the North American release, rather than leave us all hanging and avoiding spoilers (of course I speak here in the name of us all who haven’t read the books). But back to our business. Game of Thrones was one of the most pleasant surprises that have graced my TV screen in quite a while. After Camelot made me want to curl up into a tight ball and weep for the missed opportunity, Game of Thrones made me want to grab a sword and start slaying villains. Starting with the intro – and an amazing intro it is and ending with a little cliffhanger, Game of Thrones was one hell of a ride. I still have trouble figuring out every name of every character and how they connect to one another, so I’ll steer clear of that territory until I have a good grasp on them, however I have to say, the actors have really impressed me and the fact that fans of the books say it stays true to the story gives this show [...]

The fourth episode came and went and The Borgias seems to be only getting better and better. This week’s episode focused on the marriage of Lucrezia Borgia(Holliday Grainger), the only daughter of Pope Alexander VII (Jeremy Irons) with the courtesan Vanozza(Joanne Whalley). I had to mention the mother because even though there was little focus on her character so far, this time she had a lot to say. The Pope has decided to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to Giovanni Sforza(Ronan Vibert) due to his political position that could come in handy. The episode shows a lot of the political power plays of the time. “Selling” your daughter to the highest bidder was not uncommon. The Pope is no stranger to this practice as we have seen, he embraces the opportunity to fortify his position as Pope of Rome and ruler of the catholic world. It’s a little disturbing to see the wedding and think that Lucrezia was around fourteen when she married Sforza who was obviously much older than her. I think the show did a great job at portraying the customs of the time, however unpleasant they were. Let’s keep the story short - Vannozza is banned [...]

Took me a while to get around watching this Quebec made film – English title I have killed my mother. It has won a lot of attention and a lot of positive reviews from festivals all over the world, even the prestigious Cannes festival, so I thought I would give it a shot. The movie was written, directed and starred by Xavier Dolan(Hubert Minel), who stated that it’s largely based on his relationship with his own mother. It presents a different side of the mother/son conflict during the teenage years. Most films focus on the parental point of view or on the unhappiness the child might feel around the parent and the parent always comes out as the bad guy. In I have killed my mother there are no good guys or bad guys. Sometimes the movie will make you side with one character or the other, but their flaws are ever present so you can’t stick to your original opinion for more than a few minutes. The son is portrayed as an egotistical little bastard (I am not sure if that was the intention or not) but that’s how he came off to me. Always complaining about the smallest [...]

After an incredibly long Hiatus, though it might have seemed longer considering just how much I wanted to see the next episode, Supernatural is back with My Heart Will Go On. This episode can be considered one of the “light hearted ones” and really, we all know they never predict anything good for our favourite boys. Like all episodes of this nature it was rather bittersweet with secrets being revealed to us, but not to the characters, secrets that I am hoping will set the wheels in motion for another season. (Though secretly I hope they resolve everything in this season and bring something fresh to the table for the next one.) Let’s see what happened, shall we? *SPOILERS AHEAD, ADVANCE AT YOUR OWN RISK* The episode started in a fashion reminiscent of Final Destination – we are slowly shown items that can be potentially dangerous to a man in his garage, he narrowly avoids death a few times and then he meets a rather unpleasant demise at the “hands” of a garage door. I have to say, this episode really made me consider all the ways I could die by simply crossing the street. The boys are off [...]

I have finally got my grubby hands on Meskada, been wanting to see this movie since I first heard it holds a plethora of actors I love – Norman Reedus, Nick Stahl and Johnathan Tucker to name a few. Meskada is a movie about a crime that shocks a small community, a little boy is murdered in his house and the murder serves as a vehicle to reveal the intricacies of small town politics and the ripple effect seemingly unrelated facts have upon the lives of the locals. This movie is in the same vein as Winter’s Bone, but unlike that film, which I hated and found quite boring, Meskada managed to hold my attention and interest for its whole run. It’s a slow building movie that holds back on grand action. There are no cars exploding in the background as Noah Cordin(Nick Stahl) tries to save the day, it’s in fact a revelation of frustration. Everyone is frustrated one way or another – the mother that wants revenge for her child, another mother who is helpless in front of her child’s suffering, the detectives hindered in their investigation and the list can go on to cover all the inhabitants [...]

I have to admit I had very high hopes for the third episode of this historical drama and I am happy to say most of them have been met. We got to see more character development this episode, more drama, more plots and the same fine acting as before. Last week I complained about the lack of character development for Lucrezia. She seemed like the odd one out, shy and pleasant, waiting for the world to be a bright, beautiful place, completely different from what I know about the true Lucrezia, but with Holliday Grainger’s performance it became clear to me that she really might have been just that, an innocent girl that was molded into the villain she later became. We see how her views of the world are slowly shaped by her brother’s influence, by her father’s wishes, by a misstreses advices and all of that. This episode was more about her than anyone else. She is slowly turning from the innocent little girl into a genre savvy person who I can see in the future holding a poisoned chalice or a knife to someone’s throat. Francois Arnaud continues to impress me as Cesare Borgia, to my chagrin [...]

I have to say I am not too familiar with SyFy’s original movies, the only other one I have seen has spawned a meme – IT WAS A ROBOT HEAD! For those of you who are not in the know, I am talking about Stonehenge Apocalypse. Ferocious Planet is more or less in the same vein. It starts of as somewhat dramatic but it soon turns to comedy, a dark type of comedy peppered with untimely, gruesome deaths. I was unsure whether they were just bad at drama or we’re meant to see the fun in it, thankfully it was the latter. Once that glitch was out of the way, I was able to enjoy the movie and I actually came to like it. The movie presents the adventures of a group of people caught in the backlash of a cold fusion machine gone bad. Rather than present a new opportunity for discovery, the machine sends our band of misfits into an alternate dimension where they must fight for their survival. Throughout the movie it became someone clear that the writers had a message to send out – do bad and Karma will bite you in the ass. Most of [...]

The Borgias is a new period drama, presenting the history of, as you might have guessed. the Borgia family. Unlike it’s predecessor from 1981, this adaptation of historical events is well scripted, well acted and has some pretty amazing sets. I won’t deny I was being skeptical, even with a cast that has Jeremy Irons, Joanne Whalley and Colm Feore in it. Yet another adaptation seemed redundant. However, whatever complaints I might have had have been properly disposed of after watching the pilot episode of the series. From the intro that is possibly one of the best I have ever seen, you are transported to 1492 in Rome where the Vatican is nothing more than a theater of lies and deceit, with cardinals fighting not for the people or their fate but for the Papal chair.Getting the coveted title of Pope is a task that requires all the resources a man of God can use – threats, bribery and a whole load of corruption. The main theme of the show in my opinion is the constant search for power, but also the search for someone to trust, someone to have your back in a world where you are in constant [...]

Jamie Bamber is…well, confusing. I was going to say a British actor, but he is half Northern-Irish and half American, holding citizenship for all these countries. So, rather than dwell on his genetic make-up let’s say he is an awesome actor and be done with that. I first saw Jamie in a miniseries that made history – Hornblower. I am aware very few remember it, or have seen it, but it’s something I highly recommend to everyone who is a fan of good television. He played the character of Archie Kennedy, who stole my heart with his big, blue, angst filled eyes and never gave it back. Jamie Bamber managed to make the character innocent and mischievous at the same time, you wanted to give him a hug and forever hold him safe and at the same time you wanted him to go into battle and fulfill his potential. It must be seen to be believed, seriously, watch Hornblower, you’ll get my meaning. Since his Hornblower days, when he was possibly more beloved than the title character, Jamie Bamber has appeared in shows such as Ultimate Force, Battlestar Galactica – the re-imagined series that started in 2003, Dollhouse and more recently [...]

Some TV series (mostly American) have this thing that is incomprehensible to me called hiatus. It brings unnatural levels of frustration to all fans of a TV show, particularly if the show is new and hasn’t really had the change to settle in among its fellow ratings challengers. Let’s take The Event for example. I once wrote an article naming it the best TV series of 2010. And I genuinely thought that about it. I was all excited about character development, storylines and pretty much everything else. Then the hiatus came and quite frankly I haven’t watched an episode since. I am sure they won’t miss me, but I am also sure I am not the only one to have given up on the show. I’ll wait for the show to be complete and maybe, just maybe I’ll watch it then. Not the first time it happened. Supernatural has ridiculous hiatuses too. It starts in September, goes on vacation in December, comes back for four or five episodes and then we are slammed with yet another hiatus. Of course the producers of the show know they can always count on one of the most dedicated fanbases around to always return [...]

Some writers fail horribly every now and again at giving a beloved character a proper departure. Instead of a hero’s death they get the boot in the most unceremonious way possible. Here is some character deaths that brought a lot of bad press to various shows. 10.Lucy Knight (Kellie Martin) – E.R. One of the perky, happy go lucky optimistic doctors, Lucy quickly gained the hearts of the viewers. Always ready to help out and with a sharp mind she managed to establish herself as a fan favourite quite fast. Alas she was murdered in a way that had all of the E.R. fans up in arms – stabbed almost to death, saved on the table (dramatic so far) then she dies of a pulmonary embolism(not so much dramatic as plain unworthy of her character). Don’t get me wrong, I get that death is something that happens suddenly and it’s not always heroic, but this is television, I expect lies to be served with pretty little bows around them. 9. Alex Ryan (Aaron Jeffrey) – McLeod’s Daughter After playing the character of Alex Ryan for six and a half seasons and being the last remaining character from the original [...]

It seems that more and more often we have to say good bye to actors that have made history with their performances throughout the years. Dame Elizabeth Taylor makes no exception. As I grew up she was always a role model, a strong woman, with a good head on her shoulders unafraid to show the world she can make it on her own. The fact that she was a beauty, with violet eyes that were a legend on their own, and a talent helped cement my belief that she was a force to be reckoned with. Performances in movies such as A place under the sun, BUtterfield 8 and Who’s afraid of Virgina Wolf? – she won two academy awards for leading actress in the latter film- established Elizabeth Taylor as one of the best actresses of the century. She held roles in movies such as The Father of the Bride, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Cleopatra, movies that made cinema history, with lavish sets and amazing performances from all actors involved.
I have to say I don’t usually get excited at the prospect of a documentary, unless it’s on National Geographic, but a documentary about a man’s dream of getting on to a Late Night Show seemed a little silly to me. Joining a discussion half way through on Twitter I decided to see what all the hype was about, considering I had never heard about Steve Mazan or his reasons to pursue such a dream. Michael Rooker has been tweeting about this movie for quite a while, Joke Fincioen, Biaggio Messina (the producers) and Steve Mazan(the protagonist) being his friends and I admit it’s how I got interested. Now, alongside everyone else I’m waiting for the premiere. Let’s see what we’re dealing with here. Steve Mazan is a comedian who enjoyed as a child watching The David Letterman Show. About five years ago he was diagnosed with incurable cancer and rather than spend his time jumping of cliffs to prove himself he is alive (yes, people do that) he decided to pursue his dream while time was still on his side. That dream is to be seen, performing stand-up comedy on The Late Night Show with David Letterman. Quite an [...]

I have to say I quite enjoyed this film. It’s not earth shattering as far as the character development goes, but it’s not as bad as some other movies belonging to this particular genre. I am number four tells the story of one of the survivors of a genocide, except it didn’t take place on Earth, but on another planet called Lorien. Only nine children escaped and they are meant to be the ones that destroy the Mogadorians – the evil race that wiped their planet away. They are all protected by chosen people, until they come into their powers and they are ready to start fighting back. Now, as I said before, it’s not a bad movie, nor is it a bad plot line, however what I just wrote above we find out in the first ten minutes of the movie via an internal monologue from John aka Number Four (Alex Pettyfer). I wished they would’ve released these information in a different manner, rather than having it dumped on me all at once. It was getting a bit boring during this “internal presentation” mostly because it seemed like it would never end. The movie has some nice action sequences, [...]

Today was definitely a day for sci-fi movies. Paul had been on my list of things to watch for quite a while now and finally I got around to it. It’s one of the latest Simon Pegg/Nick Frost productions and they sure hit the jackkpot (again). I tend to say this a lot, but this is not a movie for everyone. Their particular brand of humour is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I doubt that there will be some people not finding Paul hilarious. (Unless you are a religious zelot…then you might get just a tiny bit insulted.) Without giving away to much of the plot, this is what’s going on. Clive and Willy are two best friends and devoted nerds visiting the US. After attending the San Diego Comic-Con they decide to take the scenic route to see all the important landmarks for geeks all over the world – Area 51, Roswell and so on. This is how the meet up with Paul - a foul mouthed alien with huge puppy eyes that could melt an iceberg. The tsunami wave created by that earthquake wiped out a lot of coastal Japan, buildings caught fire, fell down taking those inside with them, cars were tossed into the depths of the ocean and a lot of people were left scarred for life, be it physically or psychologically. Over 20 countries have been issued a tsunami warning – Taiwan, the Phillipines, Australia, New Zealand and Russia being just a few of the countries that are still in danger.
OK, let’s start from the beginning. We got last Friday a comeback from Eve, I was wondering where that little Mother of all Monsters went. Apparently she’s traveling up the highway turning Jesus loving truck drivers into homicidal maniacs via a bug in the ear. Yes, I did say bug in the ear…well, it’s more worm like, but my sentiments towards it were the same. Sam and Dean investigate a strange string of murders (but you probably already knew that, it is called Supernatural for a reason) Except this time they have Bobby(Jim Beaver) joining them. I have to say Jim, you look awfully sharp in a suit, but as of season 4 the trench coat is to much Castiel to see it on anyone else. Fashion aside, they are a little stumped as to what went on, until they see Eve – not so pretty on camera Eve – getting in the trucker’s cabin. Dean is a bit taken with the sight of Eve from behind, until she turns towards the camera and we see she is actually one fugly mother. Oh, Dean…you and women monsters, not a good combination. While they pretend to be FBI agents a murder [...]

Ok, ok, so he doesn’t always wear leather, but unlike most of the characters he portrays he is a teddy bear at heart. I have seen him in a lot of movies throughout the years, but he never stood up for me as much as he did in Henry, portrait of a serial killer and in The Walking Dead. Surprisingly in both occasions he made his characters more likeable than either of them had the right to be. Now, now, bear with me, say you didn’t feel like hugging him when he was freaking out as Merle Dixon (The Walking Dead) on that hot roof in Atlanta. I dare you. I should probably bet money, I would get rich. Most of his characters seem to be beyond redemption, yet somehow the way he plays them make the “bad” guy more memorable than any hero. I mean, without being a racist bastard myself, I still want to see more of Merle than I would want to see of the show’s hero – Rick (still talking The Walking Dead for people outside the loop.) And all credit for that goes to, you guessed it, Michael Rooker. Not many people can play a [...]

Took me a while to get to this review, mostly because I have been away, but my fingers have been itching since I watched the episode on Friday. This episode that had Supernatural fans break Twitter (yet again, if I may add) was awesome. One of the best episodes this season (I am perfectly aware I say that about most episodes, but it’s well deserved) had Sam and Dean land in a sort of alternate reality where they are Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles playing Sam and Dean on a not so popular show with the audiences, called Supernatural. Are you with me so far? Balthazar (Sebastian Roche) pays the boys a visit while they are at Bobby’s – alas, no Jim Beaver this episode – and tosses them to an alternate dimension/reality in order to protect the keys to the kingdom. Well, to the place where Castiel keeps the weapons of Heaven nicely stashed. It was a hilarious episode, confusion at every step for the boys who were suddenly faced with incredible challenges. Dean can’t get over the fact that Sam/Jared is married to Genevieve Cortese/ Ruby, who in turn can’t get over the fact that Dean and Sam [...]

Nicholas Courtney has passed away yesterday at the age of 81. This wonderful man has been a childhood hero for a lot of people as The Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in the long time running show Doctor Who. Even for those of us who weren’t around the time he portrayed the iconic figure he is well renowned as one of the best characters to ever grace the show with his presence and few other people have become so important in the general psyche as he has. Murray Gold – composer for the revived series of Doctor Who has expressed his sadness for the departure of Nicholas Courtney on his twitter feed and Tom Baker – one of the most memorable Doctors, who has starred alongside Courtney for several years in the aforementioned show, has made a statement on his website saying that Courtney will be terribly missed. Considering the fact that he was such an iconic figure in the show’s history perhaps he will get a honorable mention in the new series? He was already remembered during The Poison Sky by the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, a further proof that [...]

It’s Tuesday today. Took me this long to gather the strength to write something about the episode that aired last Friday. It wasn’t bad per say, but (the word that cancelled my previous statement) I just didn’t enjoy it. It was one of those love them or hate them episodes. I suppose it was because there was no happy ending, or because the Doctor didn’t pop by in his TARDIS to stop the Autons, oops, I mean the mannequins. For the first 10 minutes or so I was sure I was watching a re-run of Doctor Who (for those of you who don’t know this show – get watching.) But back to the story at hand. Sam, who was left convulsing on the floor at the end of the last episode is “much better” now. That is a lie of course. He seems to remember much more from those 2 minutes=one week of hellish memories than he gives away. Dean is not convinced but he seems to let it slide for the moment. And back to the episode – Sam and Dean are investigating a strange set of murders seemingly impossible to have been committed by a person. Can you [...]

Last night’s episode of Supernatural was one of great reveals, we finally find out what Sam has been up to this past year when working with grand pappy. Too bad the revelation is bitter and shook my entire view of his character. Since this season started we got glimpses of Sam, but with Dean’s aid he kept it on the straight and narrow, Samuel on the other hand seemed more content to roll his eyes and exhale deeply to show his displeasure at his grandson’s antics. Can you call them that? I have to say, I think the whole behaviour that grandpa displayed was supposed to make him a more…acceptable character, but it fell short in my eyes. The man is beyond redemption. Let’s back up a bit however and get some background. This episode, titled Unforgiven – a very appropriate title – brings us back to a town that Sam and Samuel visited a while back to investigate some mysterious disappearances. We find out what happened through various flashbacks that Sam has throughout the episode and it’s not pretty. Death did tell him to not scratch the wall for a reason, but judging by what went on this episode, [...]

Took me a while to figure the whole process, but eventually all became clear and I began following people. After finding some of my favourite celebrities, I started following Wendy Shepherd. Wendy, if you want to blame anyone for my incessant questions, whining and occasional rant post the time we “twitter-met”, blame Sean Flanery and Norman Reedus. Yes, no one else is to blame but them.
** Spoilers ahead** After a wait, that was longer than necessary, the boys are finally back and this time not just in the physical sense – Sam(Jared Padalecki ) get his soul back and the team is complete once more…or is it? We all waited breathlessly to see what will happen now that Death decided to show kindness – a kindness that our resident angel Castiel(Misha Collins) was against from the very start – and they kept us guessing for a few minutes. Not all is great since the very start when we are faced with the uncertainty of Sam’s future. We know his soul is back intact, but it’s as intact as a body with a seeping raw wound. Ok, I ad libed a bit on what Cas said, cause what we imagine is always worse than the reality, not sure it applies in this case though, somehow imagining what it must be like to spend a year in a cage with Lucifer and his angry brother doesn’t seem to be enough. But I digress – this is what happens, the cliff note version. Sam and Dean(Jensen Ackles) hug – my heart really melted on that scene, cause let’s [...]

As all of you present know, last night was crazy, wrapped in a box of crazy with a crazy bow on top, but it was also one of the best nights of fun I had in a long while. I’m glad you all enjoyed the contests all the sponsors put together and the episode, it was amazing, wasn’t it? After eight long weeks we finally had the change to see the boys again and it was like they weren’t missing for so long. But that is another story for a later time. We, at genuineadmirer.com would like to congratulate everyone of the contestants, those who won and those who didn’t. Your knowledge of all things supernatural surprises me in the best of ways each time we get to do something like this together. Someone put it better last night on Twitter – we all won cause we had a new episode, but I think we also won because we showed we can pull together and make something great. Not sure many fandoms can say that. A big CONGRATULATIONS goes to @spnep4ever2 – winner of our puzzle and to @phoenixlouise - who won the t-shirt, like we said we’ll get the [...]

As we all know, Supernatural was put on hold for one week by the “sweet” people of CW Network. Sweet with a pinch of salt and a side of lemon, maybe, considering the amount of hatred they got for their uninspired decision to prolong the agony of no new Supernatural – #SaltAndBurnCw, anyone? This did give us a unique opportunity, however. We decided to join the SPN Party that our fandom is hosting on the 4th of February. The Twitter party that occurs with every major Supernatural occasion is becoming quite a hit and since we love to share with you this amazing event – let’s face it, how many other fandoms have such a great dedication? – we’ll be giving to two lucky winners some nice prezzies, and when I say nice I mean awesome. Check out below our little gifts and let me know if you like them. I feel an unnatural desire to add a smiley face, but that would be unbecoming from such a serious site.
The Internet is buzzing, the new Superman has been cast, and apparently some people find fault with the choice that was made. Henry Cavill, previously known from series such as The Tudors and movies such as The Count of Monte Cristo or Stardust is going to embody the iconic superhero. Some are pleased, some not so much, the reasons for their disapproval ranging from he’s too young to he’s too British. People seem to forget Superman saved the Planet several times, he didn’t pluck up the United States and left the world to go boom, also he is an alien so Americans should stop hogging him. I am certain he is a great choice, of course time might prove me wrong, but I think we should all lay back and enjoy the ride, let’s see the movie first and dismiss the actors afterwards if need arises. I have read on the ever noisy twitter that he doesn’t look the part. We haven’t seen him in the part yet so let’s give him a chance and trash talk later, shall we? Let’s face it, you can’t please everybody and most of the times when someone is cast as an iconic figure [...]

**SPOILERS BELOW** We have a running theme this month and next month, Oscar nominated movies. Some of them I loved, some of them I hated. The King’s Speech is one of the movies I have adored, don’t let the title fool you, this is a story of self discovery and friendship not just a story about the power of words. Let’s see what happens in this movie. Colin Firth is Albert, Bertie, King George’s younger son, suffering from a speech impediment. This ailment has made him see countless speech therapists with no success, until he meets Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) who lends him a friendly ear and helps him get over the countless childhood traumas that have led to his current problem. The acting is superb, the settings as well, while watching I felt myself transported 75 years ago, to interwar Britain. I admit I am quite biased when it comes to Colin Firth, I would probably watch a shampoo commercial if he was in it and call it Oscar material, however he shines in his role, as he does in all of his performances. He makes Albert into a likeable character without even trying. For the first minutes of [...]

I am neither a fan of alien movies nor anything that is thriller related, still, this movie caught my attention. I am a psychologist and when I saw that psychology is present in the movie I wanted to find out more. The Fourth Kind is a mix of mystery, sci-fi and thriller, and it is (somewhat) based on real life events – the mysterious disappearances that took place in Nome, Alaska. The movie starts with Milla Jovovich who introduces herself saying that this film is a dramatization of (real) events that occurred October 1st through the 9th of 2000, in the northern Alaskan town of Nome. The true part The move indeed has a true part. The true part is that the FBI did investigate the disappearances, which took place between the 1960s and 2004, and concluded in 2006 that alcohol was common factor in most of the disappearances. Basically the FBI’s opinion is that “excessive alcohol consumption and a harsh winter climate” are to blame for the mysterious disappearances. Fiction(?) Milla Jovovich plays Dr. Abigail Tyler, the psychiatrist (or psychotherapist, it’s not clear to me) who, during clinical hypnotherapy sessions, stumbles upon the alien abduction link between her patients.
Apparently this movie is the best thing to have come out as far as the movie world is concerned in later years. It received 4 Oscar nominations and over 50 other awards and nomination. The thing is I didn’t really like this movie and by that I mean I hated every second of it. Don’t get me wrong, the acting wasn’t bad, it was just the rest that really had me wishing for time to pass sooner. I do like to finish what I started so I watched it until the end, waiting for some major breakthrough, it just never happened. It was too long for what little action it had and it proved nothing in the end. Don’t get me wrong, there is a plot, but that plot could’ve been solved in the first…ten minutes of the movie. If I would’ve squinted really hard to sift through the lack of action and meaningful dialogue maybe fifteen minutes tops, but it certainly didn’t warrant a shocking 110 minutes. What happens is this – young girl with a sad story (she takes care of her two younger siblings, has a crazy mother and basically runs the house) needs to find her [...]

Beware, contains **SPOILERS** It’s been a while since I last watched a movie, I am usually more inclined towards tv series since movies tend to forgo character development sometimes in order to fill their 90 or so minutes with action and Special FX that can give you a seizure. Black Swan is a rare example of a movie that is made better by the absence of fast paced action and the aforementioned explosive effects. This movie is for lack of a better word, sweet. It keeps you intrigued thoroughout the entire lenght of the movie, you just have to keep guessing. In my case I was wrong while guessing nine out of ten times. I pride myself in finding out quite easily where the movie is heading, the predictability of some writers is flagrant, but this is a gem among a lot of Hollywood drivel. Natalie Portman plays Nina an aspiring ballerina, who craves the great roles but always misses out because she is unable to let herself go, she just can’t lose control. She gets the chance to play the Swan Queen in a new rendition of Swan Lake, directed by Thomas (Vincent Cassel) a callous, yet sympathetic director [...]

Whenever I hear his name I flashback to the first time I saw him, it was a show called Rescue 77 and I became infatuated with his character after the first episode. Fame LA followed that (I am aware they came out in reverse order) – and it was my chance to hear him sing, then Angel came along and there really was no escape anymore. I was hooked for life. But who is Christian Kane? I could give you a physical description, add in some biographical details and leave my imagination run wild and I am sure we wouldn’t be close to solve that particular puzzle. Since that is a question only he can answer and he’s a little out of my reach I’ll just let the words fly and see where that leads us. Beware subjective opinions below.
